Saundra worked tirelessly. She edited wedding proposals, haggled with wholesalers and growers in English, Spanish, and Dutch. She charmed the big-hatted ladies who wandered in after church or bible study. She reassured the men who had found themselves in the dog house with their mothers, wives, or mistresses. She chided brides who did not have a clear understanding of what “blush” meant.
