Ephemeral

I had hoped to release an episode about spring ephemerals for the month of April, but I am at a loss.

Flowers of Film, Flowers of War

The Oscars are tonight, and I thought I’d reflect on the powerful ways two of the nominated films used flowers to help tell their stories and how they urge us to remember lessons from history.

The Flower of Creation

“Life sprang […] from the lotus.” In this first episode of Season 3, let’s delve into a flower that’s closely tied to divinity and many Eastern faiths: the lotus flower.

We’ll wade in together to take a closer look at a flower that not only offers spiritual guidance but also informs one’s country’s rich culture—and the creative process.

Legend of the Poinsettia: An Earnest Offering

On the final day of the year, here’s the season’s final episode of Gathered: Storied Botanicals! It’s the story of the Poinsettia, a flower that goes by many names and has an intricate history that illuminates the many gifts of the Christmas season.

Happy New Year!

Girlish Notions (or an Excruciating Faith)

Some unexpected heartbreak has changed my plans for this month’s episode. Instead, I revisit a lyric essay I wrote in Chicago called, “Girlish Notions.” It’s a departure from past episodes and more personal than I’m comfortable with, but I felt compelled to create something in hopes of a little release and comfort. I hope it can be a kind of catharsis for others.

Because of some language of sexual assault, listener discretion is advised for this episode.

Gather ‘Round: Devil’s Guts & The Vine’s Snare

IN THIS EPISODE. They lie low to the ground. Sneaky and insidious, they creep along forest floors, climb garden gates, and can even choke out their neighbors. This Halloween, let’s follow the coils of creeping vines that have made their way into our culture, from 19th-century literature to the horror movies we watch every spooky season.

Happy Halloween!

Gather ‘Round: The Story of the Lupine Ladies

JULY 31, 2022

IN THIS EPISODE. Having missed June’s episode, let’s catch up on an Icelandic adventure that revealed insight into the lupine flower, its role in ancient Rome, Native American medicine, and restoring soil health in Iceland. From there, we gather a fresh look at a life philosophy through a classic children’s story.

Original music composed and performed by Raven Bauer Durham.

Gather ‘Round: The Story of the First Tulip

MAY 31, 2022

IN THIS EPISODE. Because of the whirlwind month that is May, I wasn’t able to put in the ample research I wanted to for the intended episode topic. Instead, I thought I’d put together a shorter episode, one that tells the Persian tragic folktale of the first tulips.

Also, new and original music by Raven Bauer Durham!

All Flocked Together

APRIL 18, 2022

IN THIS EPISODE. Say it with flowers sounds like the slogan of a Teleflora company, but the meaning we assign flowers when we can’t find the words has been a part of human history. One particular blossom has carried the weight of juxtaposing meanings for us for centuries. READ MORE
